Raheem Sterling has reportedly been handed a start for England’s World Cup opener against Italy this evening.

There have been growing calls for manager Roy Hodgson to start Sterling for the clash with Italy, but he hinted yesterday that it was not in his thinking.

However, despite Adam Lallana playing well in the warm up games, Hodgson has selected Liverpool star Sterling right from the off.

He will reportedly play on the right in a 4-5-1 formation, with Danny Welbeck operating on the opposite flank, giving England pace out wide.

ENGLAND TEAM: Hart; Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines; Gerrard, Henderson; Rooney, Sterling, Welbeck; Sturridge
